Work Well Done

What inspires, creates, manifests work well done… the first time?  I wonder …

I confess this my current learning nugget. Fortunately the grab is tender and I am ready to play. There are these really nice carpenters working on our windows and trim on the outside of the house for the next three weeks. This is a job that is necessary ONLY because the original builder and contractors who we hired to build our home installed the windows incorrectly and did a poor job on the trim around the house. Of course, we don’t find out how poorly until many years later when rot and separated wood needs replacing.

So, my mind wonders; is it incompetency, laziness, spite, speed or what that causes poor workmanship? There is a saying that anything worth doing is worth doing well. I guess I subscribe to this old adage more often than not. I am not a fanatic and perfectionist; but I do examine the situation for the best result and most favorable outcome. When it comes to sustainable building, I do expect a long life.

Maybe if this were the only problem with our home over the years I would not be bothered. But there have been many issues over the years and the window rot is our current teaching. I don’t believe there is any one answer and all of the ideas offered earlier are true and partial. The question now arising is, how I can convey the desire and importance for the current repairs to the windows and trim to be performed well  so the next steward of this fine house won’t need to repeat the experience.

Where does inspiration for work well done, the first time, arise? I wonder…
